Exiting the water dizzy. How to fix orientation issues
One of the biggest problems in open water swimming and triathlon event is exiting the water disorientated. This article covers two quick tips to prevent this from happening:
- Swim with earplugs. As all races require a cap to swim, you can simply solve this problem with earplugs
- By ‘hearing’ the water. If earplugs don’t work for you you can simply make sure your cap is above your ears. When the water enters your eardrum it will self balance you as the swimmer
The key things to avoid are:
- Getting water stuck in your cap
- Breathing on one side only
Regardless of the techniques you use you should also practice a transition warmup routine that includes walking from the water exit to your bike to or three times. This enables you to make sure that even if you are disorientated out the swim, you can run a straight line to your bike with confidence to optimize your transition.
